Kantartzis originates from the Greek word Kantari, which means the steel yard that refers to the Roman steelyard or Roman Balance instrument. Hence, the Kantartzi is the man whose profession was to use this instrument to measure, weigh and scale merchandise or products in the old times, and those who practiced this profession where the trusted ones between Caesar and the owners of the farms, as there was no money standing as means of exchange that time.
A profession that gained more importance during the Ottoman Empire as they needed to collect taxes (known that time as “Jizya” and “Zakat”) from citizens of the countries they ruled who didn’t trust the Othman’s, so they needed those local trusted professionals, and this is my great great grandfather and his Kantari , a well reserved symbol of our family passed on from father to son.
